NRA, National Rifle Association

I have been teaching the Arizona CCW class since 1994 when the original CCW law went into effect, and I have been an instructor or coach since 1980. I have taught swimming and water safety, first aid, flying, soccer, bowling and the NRA Rifle (IRA), Pistol (IPA) and Personal Protection (IVA) courses. My teaching and personal experiences have given me a unique insight into personal safety, law enforcement and criminals. I have had unfortunate encounters with criminals and cops on more than one occasion, starting when I was about 17. In 1984 I had to shoot someone in California, in self-defense. I have been shot at and had guns and other weapons drawn on me more than once, and not just by law enforcement! If you want to really know what it's like to be on either end of a firearm, come take my class and you will find out. You won't find this kind of real world experience anywhere else...

My concealed carry training program is approved by the Arizona Department of Public Safety

NOTE: Arizona residents are required to posses a valid Arizona CCW permit to carry a deadly weapon concealed in the state of Arizona. Non-Residents may carry a weapon concealed if they have an Arizona CCW permit or a valid state-issued CCW permit from their home state.

What is a "CCW" permit and why would I need one?

CCW stands for Carry Concealed Weapon. In some areas of the United States these gun permits or "license to carry" a concealed weapon are referred to as a CWP (Concealed Weapon Permit) or simply a "carry license". Currently, more than 45 states have adopted some form of CCW law that allows its citizen's (provided that they are not a prohibited possessor, like a convicted felon) to conceal and carry a handgun (or other weapons, depending on the state) for personal protection outside of their home or place of business. Most of these states have CCW laws that are considered "Shall Issue"* and they make it reasonably simple for any law-abiding adult to get a concealed carry handgun, firearm or weapon permit. However, in some states, (like CA) it is still difficult to obtain a concealed carry permit. In all cases, the statistics have proven that allowing law-abiding citizens to carry a concealed weapon is a direct deterrent against criminal activity and makes our streets safer. Not knowing if your next victim will be armed can be a scary proposition for the average street-punk criminal.

Many states, like Arizona, require that CCW applicants pass an approved firearms safety course before they will be issued a concealed weapon permit. In Arizona the introductory class for a five year CCW permit is a minimum of 8 hours in length and covers a wide array of topics such as firearms safety, legal issues relating to the use of deadly force, shoot/no-shoot scenarios, mental conditioning, weapons care and maintenance, firearm tactics, etc. After five years the Arizona CCW permit holder is required to renew their permit if they wish to continue to carry a weapon concealed. As of September 21, 2006, Arizona CCW permit holders can renew their permits through the mail without taking any renewal class, however, a properly executed fingerprint card is required with the application and a $43.00 money order/cashiers check. However, after December 31, 2007, renewal fingerprinting will NO LONGER BE REQUIRED. Subsequent classroom training is not required if the permit holder renews their permit on time every five years. See my renewal page for more information on renewing an Arizona CCW Permit...

Since Arizona adopted its "shall issue" concealed weapon law in 1994, there has been a decrease in the number of crimes, especially violent crimes, and that has been the case in all 45+ states with similar concealed carry laws. As in many other states, Arizona will issue a permit to any non-resident who completes the 8 hour class and is not otherwise prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm under Arizona and/or Federal Laws.

Federal and State crime statistics published yearly by the U.S. Justice Department and the FBI along with studies produced by well respected university professors such as John R. Lott Jr. have proven beyond any doubt that armed law-abiding citizens help to decrease the amount of violent crimes in their communities. This is almost always done without ever having to fire the weapon!

Cop car, cops, police, peace officer

Most crimes are committed far from any law enforcement agency or police officer. The police just can't be everywhere at all times. It's up to the good citizens of the United States to protect themselves. With a little bit of training and knowledge, prevention and avoidance of criminal contact can be accomplished by most anyone. In my class you will learn how to control almost any situation that may arise, and do it confidently, safely and within the law. Don't be a victim!

Vic Szilard, CCW Instructor

*In Arizona, "Shall issue" means you cannot be denied a permit if you qualify under A.R.S. 13-3112 or are otherwise not a prohibited possessor.
